Empty Bodies

“The highlight of Empty Bodies besides its engaging story and visuals are the performers themselves as they push their bodies to the limit to achieve the unthinkable. As a result, they interact with this magical circus world and bring the audience on this wondrous journey into what makes us human, including our connections to each other, ourselves and even materialism which defines us.”
- Andrew Bistak, Impulse Gamer
Empty Bodies was created and presented at the National Institute of Circus Arts in the National Circus Centre from September 7 - 10, 2016. Empty Bodies was again remounted and staged as part of the Provocaré Festival in 2018.

Show Description

Empty Bodies is an abstract interrogation of identity and human relationships over the span of a human life, inspired by the seminal works of 19th Century French Psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan. The creative team have paired Lacan’s philosophical notions with the expressive movement qualities of various circus acts. This multifaceted piece examines our never ending quest for fulfilment, setting us in opposition with the desires of others. Our passage through our own life stages - both ascent and decline. The desire to fully express ourselves through our fragile bodies and fragmented voices. Empty Bodies is a journey of hope, a call to live our lives wisely, to value the important moments that truly matter in our quest for self-actualisation.
